Organic Chemistry, "Form", Part 21 - An Introduction to Ethers

Greetings Dear Readers,

Yet another organic compound class is the Ether.  You can find ethers in the paint department of your local hardware store.  Most ether compounds are very volatile and extremely flammable!

Any ether molecule will consist of a single oxygen atom serving as a link (or "bridge") between two hydrocarbon groups.  The most simple ether compound possible is dimethyl-ether which contains molecules with two methyl hydrocarbon groups both covalently bonded to a single oxygen atom.  The following chart explains the ether structure in more detail.

Note the pair of non-bonding electrons above and below the oxygen atom in the general Lewis Formula.  Those lone electron pairs produce a "bend" in the molecule at the oxygen atom.

That's all for this post.  As always, thank you for reading!
