Greetings,
This post is an introduction to the fundamentals of reaction kinetics. At the very foundation of understanding chemical reaction rates, and the factors which affect them, is Collision Theory. The Collision Theory of Chemical Reaction Rates is a study of basic factors pertaining to individual molecular interactions leading to a chemical change. The factors leading to a chemical reaction are considered to be "favorable" when reactant molecule bond-rearrangement is initiated. Once the chemical change is initiated, the conversion to (a) product (molecule)s is nearly instantaneous. The rate of the chemical reaction itself is a direct result of the time-frequency of favorable collision factors. The following diagram is a summary of these collision factors and a description of an associated concept, Activation Energy.
The actual rate of a chemical reaction is a consequence of a topic called the reaction mechanism. The reaction mechanism concept explains the notion that the occurrence of a chemical reaction is actually the sum total of individual reaction steps, each with different reaction rates. It is the slowest among these reaction rates, the rate determining step, which sets the pace of the overall reaction. My next post will cover the mechanism concept in more detail. That's all for this post.
Have a good one!
