Organic Chemistry, "Form", Part 32 - Hydrocarbon Benzene Derivatives

Greetings,

This post discusses alkyl-substituted benzene compounds.  Several links to interactive images are provided.*

Many more aromatic compounds exist, simply by adding hydrocarbon groups to the benzene ring.  The most basic among these is toluene.  Many di- and tri- substituted aromatic compounds also exist.  Each of the following links will redirect you to a page where you can interactively rotate and zoom a molecular model of a particular aromatic hydrocarbon compound.  Use your mouse wheel to zoom and click-and-drag to rotate.

Toluene

ortho-Xylene

meta-Xylene

para-Xylene

para-Cymene

Toluene is used in place of benzene, which has been found to be highly carcinogenic.  The three Xylene isomers are all present in commercial xylene solvent.  Para-Cymene is a component of essential oils, namely thyme and cumin.

That's all for this post.

As always, thank you for reading!
