Organic Chemistry, "Form" - Part 25: More Complex Amines and How to Name Them

Greetings,

This post provides more examples of naming amines.  There are a few definitions which should first be explored.

Hydrocarbon Branch Prefixes

When a functional group is attached to a carbon atom, which in turn is bonded to a branched hydrocarbon structure, we use prefixes as a shorthand method to describe that branched structure.  The prefix, iso- , is used when a functional group is bonded to the central atom of a propane chain; directly or indirectly.  We also have a prefix to indicate how many carbon atoms are bonded to a carbon atom of interest; usually the one attached to a functional group.  The prefix, sec-, is used to indicate a carbon atom bonded to two other carbon atoms while, tert- (short for tertiary), indicates a carbon atom of interest bonded to three other carbon atoms.

Diagrams of Amine Lewis Structures and Their Names

Diagrams of specific examples would be most useful here, so a figure containing examples is provided below.

Note that the bottom two figures are color coded to go with their IUPAC names, which can be difficult.  Also, notice that IUPAC rules call for dropping the "-e" ending of main hydrocarbon fragment names.    An example using the "tert-" prefix is also provided, as well as two examples using the "Iso-" prefix.

That's all for this post.  As always, thank you for reading!
