Colloidal Matter, Part 3 - The Microencapsulation of Vitamin D

Another application of colloidal chemistry is in the manufacture of Vitamin D supplement products for the poultry industry.  The manufacturing process varies somewhat between producers of supplement product, but the basic process is the same; make two mixtures (one being Vitamin D in vegetable oil and the other is a starch/water slurry), combine the mixtures via a homogenizer and dry the resulting emulsion.  The resulting dried product consists of tiny globules of Vitamin D in Oil encased within a continuous starch phase.

The following drawing provides a summary of the process.

The starch matrix shields the Vitamin D globules from exposure to air.  This provides a stable environment for the Vitamin D prior to consumption.
