Empirical Formula Determination Based on Elemental Analysis Data
This post expands the previous post with a specific example. The elemental analysis data is hypothetical; made-up from an actual molecular formula and accounting for typical errors in the results. The following image shows the required calculations.
By comparing the calculations with the previous post you should be able to follow the steps outlined before. In the case above multiplication of each "lowest mol ratio" by an integer was not required because the numbers obtained are already very close to whole numbers. In my next post, I'll discuss mass spectrometry in more detail and show it's usefulness for determining the actual molecular formula of a compound!
